Answer by Jac VThe easy answer is: Go read the Bible, the Koran or Al-Qur’an or even all religious documents. Then go research the time frames in which these writings occurred and tie that to the development of civilization and you’ll have your answer.
It is a very old accepted practice based on religion and procreation and a very logical concept. Just think of all the inbreeding that would have occurred otherwise because there would have been no record of family ties.
So yes, in a way it is some sort of regulatory mechanism as well. It even makes sense even if you’re an atheist, in the sense that love do play a part and that it is a pact as far as mutual trust, respect and fidelity is concerned. Not that it is worth much in our present society but that is what is was supposed to mean.
Take love and pure blood lines out of the equation and yes, go wild. Just be prepared for the consequences. It manifested itself beautifully in the royal bloodlines during the middle ages.
Anyway, that is a very simple answer to a much more complex topic.
