Kairi_Baby: How to train a puppy when older dog is present?
I have a new puppy and I was wondering how to train her while my older dog is around. Everytime they get together, they want to run around and play (they get along pretty well). He is 3 yrs old, very well behaved. Any suggestions on how to train my new puppy?

Put the old dog in the house and take the puppy out into the yard. Or vice versa.
Put your older dog away, like in another room while you train your puppy. Otherwise, the puppy will just want to play with your other dog.Answer by SWHouston
It’s kinda like Monkey see, Monkey do…
A better trained animal can teach a younger one.

Keep the older dog, somewhere else in the house or maybe even outside while you train your new pup. Then train him like you usually do. Make training fun, with toy filled breaks and cuddles and praises. Once you’ve got his/her attention train like you would usually do.
If there is a certain trick your dog doesn’t get, tie the older dog within seeing range of the new one and make the older dog do the trick. It is like the older dog setting an example to the other one.
Happy training!Answer by tarielle_au
When we have a new puppy in the house (we do puppy raising for Guide Dogs) we train them all together. We never separate them. In my experience this can cause jealousy where the older dog will know that you are spending time with the younger dog and it’s worse if the older dog can see you both and it is shut up in the house.
Another poster mentioned ‘monkey see, monkey do’ and this definitely happens and works quite well. The pup will see you train with the older dog and will start to copy. This works especially well if you are treat training because the pup will want a reward too and will strive to do what you and your other dog are teaching it. Give it a go with both of them at the same time.
If it absolutely is not working then leash your older dog up in the back yard and give it a treat, maybe a small bone. Something that it can finish in the time you are training the younger one. Your older dog and your younger one will be happy then and they will both be within a short distance of one another so can have play time afterwards.
