A carat is a unit of mass equivalent to 200 milligrams. Although the mass of the diamond is important, the quality of the diamond is what really determines the value.
You go to a jeweler and someone there either estimates the size (and value) or takes the stone out and weighs it and puts it back – charging you for doing do.Answer by sd3r
the value of a diamond boils down to the 4 C’s
Carat – size
Color – for most diamonds, the clearer, the better
Clarity – inclusions embedded in the diamond
Cut – shape and proportions
there are other minor factors… florescence, polish, symmetry, etc but the 4C’s are the most important. the thing to keep in mind is that Carat (size) is only one factor. a one Carat flawless (IF, VVSI), colorless (D) diamond can be worth more than a 2-3 Carat poorly cut, included (SI1 or SI2), H color diamond.
