F00LZ: How to properly lock a bike to prevent it from theft?
I will be attending UC Davis next week and bike theft is very common in the campus. So far, I bought a Kryptonite u lock mini to lock my bike, but I’ve been researching that I should get a cable lock as well because thieves aren’t really prepared for two different kinds of locks. What kind of cable lock should I get, or how should I just properly lock my bike?

The kryptonite lock through the frame onto a bike rack will deter thieves.
I use a U lock (Citadel) and a strong, thick cable lock if I am going to blocking up my bike on a ride. I try to lock the U lock through the bike frame and whatever I am locking it into. The cable is threaded through the wheels and frame and whatever I am locking the bike to. When I am riding with others I use a less thick cable and all of us lock our bikes together. I think UCD has on campus bike lockers for outdoor storage near student housing. Get one of those or at least on the waiting list.Answer by sfr1224
A U Lock is a good start, but isn’t sufficient to keep your ride from being stolen. Best thing to do is use the U-Lock to secure the frame and rear wheel to the bike rack, post or other sturdy object. Then use a cable lock threaded through both wheels and the frame to secure the bike to the same sturdy object.
Thieves want to spend the least time possible stealing a bike. They do not want to spend the time to cut two locks to get your bike. With luck they’ll go for an easier target.
Be sure to take easily removable items off your bike, as well. For example, don’t leave a cycle computer on the handlebars. Also, you should replace your quick release seat post clamp with a regular bolt clamp.
Hope this helps.
Answer by larry ebest you can do is
2 locks, disassemble the bike
cable lock and U lock
[b/c thieves don;t usually carry bolt cutters AND cable cutters]
take the front wheel off
put it next to the back [or carry it with you]
now put the cable and U through the frame AND the back wheel to something solid
[back wheel is single most expensive component]
wle.
Answer by mrThe Kryptonite is great for the frame but, like you mentioned, you may want to have a cable and run it thru the wheels. A hardened steel chain with a really good padlock is good too but heavy. Always look for the weakest link.Answer by Davd C
first you can not prevent a thief from taking a bike if he want it hes going to get it a lock just keeps a Honest person honest not a thief however the best lock to get is a heavy duty harden steel u lock and cables to lock you wheels to your frameAnswer by Leif H
The best kind of lock i use is one that requires a tubular key,They are very hard to pick and make sure the cable extends through both wheels as well as through the rack or around the post. They are worth the extra costAnswer by newhavenpatriot
Get yourself a Kryptonite U-Lock and cable lock. The cable lock shouldn’t be a wimpy one; it should be at least 1/2″ thick so it’ll pinch the *$ $ hole thief’s bolt cutters and he has to buy or steal a new set of cutters. Haha, that’ll show ’em. XD
Loop the cable through the back of your front tire and then loop it through itself. Then put the U-lock around a stationary object and through your frame and your back wheel. Put one end of your U-lock through the loose end of your cable lock and then lock the U-lock.
Hope this makes sense without a picture.
