I would want to know how they select keywords to target
– you want terms that have decent traffic, low levels of competition and are relevant to your website – if they are not working this out in a systematic way for you then you could be wasting a lot of time trying to get traffic from hard to get or low valuble keywords. If they do not know how to select keywords properly I would give them a miss.
If you want to know how to do seo go to stompernet and get their STSE2 product for a dollar – do not buy anything else (be careful once you have entered your credit card details if you click to buy anything you buy it straight away – no are you sure questions or more info) and then cancel the subscriptions – watch the content and see how to do SEO from this once you understand how its done you can adquatly assess wether a SEO company know what it is doing.
Answer by SeanHello,
The best way to tell if a SEO company is any good is see if they can practice what they preech. By this – do they rank for well established keywords? (I am not talking about long tail keywords that no one searches for..)
2 – check references.
3 – ask other SEOs
Last – Google the company / consultants name. See whats out and about, how people are talking about them.

SEO company include their client, the website they’ve optimized and the website placing in search engine to have a preview for possible clients. Consider also the feedback of clients and don’t mind the price range, it’s worth it when your sales are increasing to the highest level.Answer by Jon
Hard question. But here’s what Search professionals do….
The one, best reference is to see if they are members of the largest most reputable group of Search professionals, SEMPO (the Search Engine Marketing Professionals Organization. Their directory of member companies is here: You can find one in your areas with that link. It’s not an endorsement but it’s very helpful.
What else can you do? Here are some RED flags – don’t work with any vendor that says they guarantee or promise the top spot or even the first page. Either they can’t deliver or they will get you rankings for keywords that don’t prove value, such as for your brand name.
SEO’s for small businesses are typically small businesses themselves, so get local references. Ask for five and call at least three. Remember that you don’t need just traffic, you need “quality” traffic and that’s what makes a good SEO. Ask the references if they get more SALES as a result.
As a fall-back, call your yellow page provider. All of them have an SEO program (AT&T, Yellow Book, Verizon etc.). They are reputable and have generally good results. You can also use Web.com, Yodle and Reach Local. They are national companies and have average results (see links below). They will also give you a good idea of what the right rates should be…
Good luck!

So Here there is many ways to find out if your going into a Reputable SEO company.
#1) Check their Website(s) Alexa Rankings. Visit www.Alexa.com and Enter their URL at the top.
This will give you a nice feedback if they are getting any traffic
How many websites are linking in with them (This is important)
How Long they’ve Been In Business (Domain Name)
#2) Do a Whois Report onto their Domain Name and Find out their history about when they started, who started it *Unless protected* etc..
#3) Run a Google, Yahoo and type in “www.DOMAIN-NAME-OF-COMPANY.com SCAM” and “www.DOMAIN-NAME-OF-COMPANY.com REVIEWS”

Answer by Alias GDo not simply look at their stats.
An SEO company’s ability to effectively update their own site does not equal quality customer service, or good fulfillment. Talk to the people in the companies that interest you, and feel them out. Are they asking for a lump sum? Are they more concerned about you, or just getting a check? Where are they based out of? What do they outsource and where? I used to work for one of the highest ranking SEO companies in North America. They lacked fulfillment and quality customer service to the extent that I felt they were borderline unethical, so I started my own SEO company specializing in targeting traffic to local small business.Answer by Darren J
Very simple is that SEO company at the top of all search engines? If so that should answer your questionAnswer by Colby
Three rules:
SEO is not a black box make sure the company is transparent in what they are doing.
Look for references from national magazines…etc. Client testimonials are too easy to fake.
Ask them for proof of other successes.
Here is a cool tool to help get you started:
