hayley j: How to introduce 6 month kitten to dog with no cat experience?
I just moved my kitten into my new apartment. I live with 5 other people and 1 of them has a dog, which is a rat terrier mix. I have no door to my loft so I put up a gate to keep the dog out and the cat hasn’t yet ventured out of my room without me, mainly because he’s smart and knows a dog is out there.
This is the third night of having him and they’ve seen each other a few times through the gate. The kitten is relatively unresponsive to the dog, mainly hisses if even that. The dog however sits at the gate crying and, when he sees the cat, starts barking and altogether freaking out. The dog is also taking to sitting in front of the gate and crying when he can’t see where me and the cat are.
Any suggestions?

I myself have a dog and a cat but i keep them separate with a window and constantly looked at each other so why wont you try that
Dogs and cats associate each other by smell. They start at the nose and venture to the rear end. They also like company. Now think about it, how big is that kitten and how big is that dog? Kittens and cats naturally think of dogs as their enemies, but in time become the best of friends.
Pet your kitty and with the same hand, pet the dog and vice versus with the cat. You are now transferring their smells to each other where they think “Hey, this guy smells like me!” Do this forever how long it takes and you’ll see eventually they will accept each other. You will find one to be the dominate male and most likely, it will be the cat. Any new animal that comes into a residential home has to be “introduced.”
My cat, Patches, still mourns Baby, her little rat terrier friend who died a couple of weeks ago. After a few things are taken care of, a new puppy will be introduced into our household again and the fun will begin again.
Keep smiling,

The fool-proof method is this. Rub your cat down with a towel so the towel is covered in it’s scent, then lay the towel under the dog’s food and water bowls. This will get the dog used to the cat’s smell and associate it with something good, like food. Every three days or so replace the towel.
After a few days supervise a meeting between the beasties and everything should go well. I have three cats and a dog and years of experience with animals. This method has never failed me yet 🙂
But make sure you carefully supervise you cat and the dog together for the first couple days, you don’t want any accidents.
