✔✪ Abu Haarun Hussein ✪✔: How to handle someone who mocks your religion during a job interview?
For example if a boss asks you during the job interview: “Are you related to a terrorist?”
What is a good way to handle such a situation?
can you just walk out of the interview?
and is it illegal for someone to ask such a question at an interview?
yes, in USA, is it really illegal? I know its “unethical” according to business standards, but what kind of legal repercussions are there? (I have dealt with this issue at about 2 job interviews so far… it is very disturbing)
@ Mr. G: I too do not place too much weight on the insults of others. The issue however, is that after preparing, researching, and spending years in school in preparation for employment, I find it quite a waste of my life (which is valuable) to deal with discrimination during a job interview. If an interviewer wants to be a bigot, then that is something that person would have to deal with on the Day of Judgment. But I would appreciate it if such a person would inform me ahead of time, so I can devote time to more worthwhile causes.
No one likes to be manipulated, especially when it involves one’s livelihood.
@ piggle: the abbreviation you used is very offensive to Muslims and should not be used by anyone who has respect for Allaah (God).
@ piggle: thank you for editing your post and for the advice.

Leave the room and don’t work there. Why would you want to work in that environment?
To the ignorant ones just tell them Peace.
Teach him/her the truth, keeping in mind only Allah(swt) can give them the Knowledge and open their eyes to the truth.
Answer by travellinthroughYou didn’t say where you are, laws are different in different places.
In the US, that would comment could get the interview into trouble because we are not allowed to ask questions related to religion.
If you live somewhere where you are not protected from discrimination, then I guess you just say, “Yes, but only through marriage.”
Answer by AbijigokuThat is actually illegal and you can take legal action against the company he represents.Answer by Mr G
To be honest I’m sick of hearing everytime someone says something about someone they don’t like and its automatically rascist, I know there are people who has made rascist comments to people but you do get to the point everyone has to watch what they say to everyone else, So my advice is just get over it or insult his religion back or something and get a life, Were not in Nursery School anymoreAnswer by fabz
its a test to see your tolerance level. when your applying for positions in sales or customer service…your interviewer will ask you such annoyin questions to see your tolerance level.Answer by kurt
directly just say to your interviewer or your boss that religion is not a basis for being a terrorist.we have our own faith and belief. always remember no one has the right to mock ones opinionAnswer by Gin
You can certainly walk out of an interview – be excruciatingly polite and dignified, and explain exactly why you’re leaving.
And, please please please write to the senior HR person, or the CEO (depending on the size of the company), and tell them (again with precise and dignified politeness) exactly what happened: this person is damaging the company’s reputation, as well as depriving it of the chance to employ good staff.
Evil!
Answer by smile!Of course you can just walk out. That is no way to treat ANYBODY no matter if they are up for a job or just out on the streets. You could ask them the same question, because there are terrorists of all colors. I, myself, would punch him out but that’s just me. I think the illegal aspect of it would be that it was maybe discriminating? But I’m not sure.Answer by piggle
someone actually said that to you??
I personally would very politely say ‘Well, guess what i’ve just decided i don’t want to work for you after all’ and leave and not look back!
Edit: I apologise, it has been removed. I should have realised and used a less offensive term.
Answer by farihaI would walk out, and not work there. They have no right to insult Muslims like that.Answer by Sadia
If you simply walk out, then you wouldn’t really achieve much, the people would still be left with false impressions on Islam and you wouldn’t have a job. I’d try and politely refute their comments and try and clear up their misconceptions. I can’t stand it when people believe lies and false things about Islam and i would feel terrible if i didn’t point out the mistakes to them. Whether they listen and learn is up to them but i’d feel that i’d done my bit to clear up misconceptions.
If someone asks, “are u related to a terrorist” well thats asking for trouble isn’t it. But i would try and keep calm and explain that islam teaches peace and traquility between all and Alhamdulillah all my family (that i know of) try our best to follow islam.Answer by Lolla
Just say “No, are you?”
When someone asks you stupid or aggressive questions and you are not in a position of explaining, just answer in the same way, simple answers like “No, ARE you?
When I was in USA nobody ever said to me anything about my English, they just correct me when I make mistakes, and I really appreciated their way. But when I went back home I met with many British people, they all insist on telling me “your English is good” something in that sentence made me feel bad, so I just say back to them “Yours too” and I do see how they feel.
Answer by blue eyed muslimah (11w)its unfortunate that in a professional atmosphere, and by that i mean, a place that you “spent years in school in preparation for employment” , not at burger king.. that you would come across such a situation. aaoothubillah. i would’ve ended the interview as well. it doesnt sound like something that is “illegal” and out of the bounds of the law/whats legal..although morally unacceptable, doesnt seem that he’s going to be in any real trouble for that. i would find out thru the better business bureau (sorry i dont know where u live), or similar , and file a complaint to who ever will listen. times are tough and you probably need the job, but i wouldnt stoop to such a level to beg for employment from a cretin. he probably thought he was lightening the atmosphere and making a joke, but obviously it over stepped a little bit.the man just had no couth. continue your search elsewhere fee sibil Allah, and inshaAllah there will be baraka in it
as for what i wouldve done in the particular situation.. walk out , say something, keep sitting.. im not a confrontational person. if i were a man maybe id be different. but in a situation where someone insults not only you but your religion, what else should you do? sit there awkwardly.. even attempt to laugh it off? probably not..but it seems more of a sunnah action to be kind to the man and sit thru the rest of the interview, thank him for seeing you, and never call him again
Answer by She saidI would be suing the cretin who asked that…
Did he ask the same question to any Catholic candidates? Jewish candidates? There are terrorists of both of these faiths so I guess the only conclusion is he is bigoted and prejudice and that is not legal in an interview.
Answer by pero_102i would laugh at that silly question. I know he’s asking me that to test my patience, know my human nature and see how i would cope up with stressful situation. I would also thank him because he has the guts to asked that meaning he would really like to know me more personally, few steps for acceptance.
But if such questions or statements goes beyond true interviews, I would surely sue him, or he would thank me for not making him suffer before he is history.Answer by two11two
Just forget about it, and dont work there. It is obviously a sign of what your future would be like if you worked there.
Also, I’d like to know how an abbreviation for anything could be offensive, just curious.
