Katrina: How to “bless” water – Holy Water?
Does anyone know the prayer said when blessing water? (Holy water) I know it’s preferable to have a priest do it but yet I seek to learn this myself.

It’s a really complicated process when I saw a priest do it.

Anyway, all water is holy in a way. Water = life, so why should some water stuck in a bottle be better than some from your sink?

The priest just makes the sign of the cross over it with his right hand.

It’s not “preferable” to have a priest do it — it’s required.

A layperson may perform an “emergency baptism” — on a newborn baby who’s in danger of death, for instance — but no blessing of the water is required in that case.

In that case, the layperson simply puts some water on the forehead, and says, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
