Michelle Y: How old can a puppy be to put flea medication on it?
What kind should I use. My puppy is 5 months old and has fleas. We are thinking about putting a flea collar on him. I have always heard a puppy has to be 6 months old to have flea medication on it.

Call you vet and ask. I am the package says 6 months, but all the vets I have been do usually let me put a flea collar on at 4 months, and drops between 5 or 6 months.
Sometimes on the medication it tells how old the puppy has to be. Probably from four months and on..SO.. >,<Answer by Zaneka

They make flea spot on for pups as young as 8 weeks old your dog is certainly old enough for a good spot on fela treatment like Frontline. just make sure you know your dogs weight and then find the approiate Frontline for your dog by his weight.Answer by Swamp Poodles *TAS*
Frontline Plus is safe for puppies over 8 weeks old.Answer by ~Amerz~
5 months is definitely old enough for Frontline, etc. I wouldn’t waste your money on a flea collar, they are really ineffective. Just make sure you buy the flea meds that is appropriate for your dogs weight and you should be fine…When in doubt, check with the vet 🙂Answer by Bama Bully Rescue
5 months is old enough for the vast majority, if not all flea meds. Don’t bother buying a flea collar, they are dangerous and they don’t work very well. They also just repell the fleas, they don’t kill them.
Try Comfortis, a new product that works like Capstars but kill fleas for a month. It will kill all the fleas on your puppy within 30 minutes.
Or you can try one of the other topical products such as Frontline (Plus), K9 Advantix, BioSpot and Advantage. These are applied to the skin on the withers and hip area and last a month. Some versions of these products also protect against ticks and misquitos. Some of these also are birth control for fleas, they don’t kill the fleas but gradually eliminates them from the dog and household by stopping their ability to reproduce. These types of products do not protect your dog from bringing home fleas from other places like walks, parks, etc.
Adams spray is also very effective.
Be sure to also keep your puppy on monthly heartworm preventative. It is extremely important if you live in an area where it is prevelent year round or in summer. There are heartworm preventatives that also kill fleas so it’s only one pill for everything once a month.
Good luck!

But before that it is okay to use a shampoo with flea stuff.
Just becareful to used as directed because it can cause skin irritation and dryness.Answer by skuby22
Most good products are approved for start between 6-8 weeks. Any product that you can buy over the counter is not a good choice. Opt for Frontline or Advantage. Anything that is from a vets office is good. A flea collar will not kill the living fleas on him. Hartz is probably one of the worst and has been known to cause seizures so I defenitely do not suggest that. Get it taken care of asap, a house full of fleas is no fun! Good luck!Answer by C.D.
I put Advantage on my dog at 7 weeks. We asked the vet what to use and this is what he suggested.Answer by Help
Some flea medications are safe and you just must read instructions.Flea collars are useless. You can put the advantage on a pet as young as 7 wks. old.
