Andrew: How much would a set of hockey equipment cost?
I’m interested in playing hockey, and I was wondering if anyone knew a prince range for a full set of hockey equipment – I’d be looking for affordable equipment, of course. I don’t need aerodynamic shoelaces or anything fancy like that.

Ice or roller hockey?
Full-contact or beer league?
Slap shots allowed?
Level of play?
Please provide this so we can better help you ..
Answer by Mike OWhat position are you gonna play? My advise would be to join a beginner league first of all. Now if your going to play goalie, good luck, you’ve chosen the hardest position there is to play in ANY sport. It will take you quite awhile to learn and will require total dedication. Remember everyone starts out the same. Steve Yzerman fell on his ass 1000 times before he scored. Ok he was probably 4 years old but you get my point. Still interested? You can prob find a cheap set of used goalie equipment for around $ 500-$ 1000 price range. Maybe even cheaper. If your going to skate ‘out’ Id say you can prob spend $ 300-$ 400 or more to get started. Go to maybe a ‘play it again sports’ or even a rink and look on the bulletin board and look around in garage sales, talk to guys that already play. They may have some extra gear for sale or know someone that does. You mentioned you didn’t want anything fancy. Well, hockey isn’t cheap. I haven’t even mentioned the prices for leagues or ice time or the hundreds of sticks you’ll have to buy or skate sharpening….Once you learn the game and get better you’ll enjoy it. If your not the ‘stick to it’ and ‘follow it through’, type of person I’d hesitate to spend the moneyAnswer by Leafsfan29
For ice hockey, here’s a reasonable breakdown of what you’ll need (prices are very much approximate; I’ve included ranges). You can try ebay or any used stores for some stuff; stuff like elbow pads, shoulder pads…you can get away with lower-end stuff. Spend money on skates (get them fitted if it’s practical), and of course…your brain bucket (helmet).
Skates: $ 150-$ 400 (above all else…you want something that fits well)
Shinguards: $ 40-$ 90
Socks: $ 10-$ 15
Pants: $ 70-$ 150 (just make sure they’re long enough; ideally you have an overlap above the knee between the top of your shinguards and your pants- a puck that hits bare skin…yeah that’s gonna leave a mark).
Protective Cup: $ 10-$ 40 (you can buy a jock short/or compression short that will have velcro tabs for your socks, it’s an all-in-one).
Suspenders (for your pants): $ 5-$ 10
Shoulder Pads: $ 40-$ 80 (go cheap unless you’re playing full check and slapshots are allowed)
Elbow Pads: $ 40-$ 80
Gloves: $ 60-$ 120+
Helmet: $ 60-$ 150 (I’d strongly consider some sort of facial protection unless you have a desire to lose your chiclets, and possibly your eyesight).
Sticks (get 2-3): $ 30-$ 200+ each
Bag: $ 50-$ 100
Jersey: $ 10-$ 150 (practice jerseys are cheap)
Mouthpiece: $ 10-$ 15 (personally I’d wear one if I was skating out)
Sticks: Do not buy the composite (one piece sticks). Just get a couple wood/fibreglass sticks.
Helmet: Get one that fits or is at least adjustable.
Happy shopping.
