How much can I get from selling my handguns at a gun shop?

: How much can I get from selling my handguns at a gun shop?
I am planning on selling my Taurus pt 740 so I can get a Glock 19. How much would I get from selling a Taurus pt 740 or any hand gun in general? Do they like take off 30% of the regular price? It was about 359+tax for the gun. How much should I offer to sell it for, and where is the lowest I should go for selling it at a local gun shop?

at a gun store, you can expect to get Maybe 50% of the guns value

half the value

Answer by zipper
One it is a used gun, two the dealer has to make a worth while profit. It also depends if the dealer feels there is a market for the handgun in the area or if he will need to sell to another dealer were the piece will be more in demand. Also if there are any blemish in the finish or signs of wear or rust will have a great deal with lowing the value of the piece too!

Ditto – gun shops will generally only give you 50%, to 75% at best, the value of your firearm. It will depend on how common or in demand your model is.

The best way to re-coup your money out of the Taurus is to do a private sale if legal in your state.

Look at a FNX 9mm. It has the safety and da/sa trigger like the 740.
At a gun shop you will get about 50% of the used value. Expect them to offer you about $ 150.
You can go to armslist.com or taurusarmed.net and try to sell your gun there.
The Taurus 700 series has been problematic though, don’t expect anyone to jump on it when you offer to sell it.
You will do better selling it to someone who wants a Taurus 740. Try –

Sell them on backpage.com. Ask for $ 50-$ 80 less than retail before taxes. I assure you you will get interest within hours.

Answer by John D
You’d be very lucky to get $ 175 for the PT740, since the gun shop will still need to make a profit on reselling it. Looking at recent Gunbroker.com sales, you can barely give them away for $ 200.
Depending on the laws where you live, you would probably make a little more selling it privately, either to a friend or in the newspaper.

In any event, take whatever you can get for it and run to get the G19. An outstanding real-world handgun.

lol yep try gunbroker.com if you want a quick sale. ARMS list.com is great for local sales and ftf to avoid huge transaction costs. I just bought a gun off gunbroker.com for $ 350 so don’t feel weird about shipping and ffl fees.

You will get 65 percent of their used value—-TOPS. I had to sell three of my guns around two years ago due to going out on disability and having no immediate income for awhile

Answer by Uncle Pennybags
The couple of times I’ve tried to sell a gun to a gun store, they offered me 40 to 50 cents on the dollar of what they sell it for new.

* 60% of the Original Price you paid for them.* Example: Gun cost> $ 100.00 you would get $ 60.00 Dollars.* Its Best to sell them yourself to individual buyers in order to recover 80% of their True Value.* You gain a Xtra 20% by selling them yourself so instead of only getting 60% you get 80%.*

Answer by Mr.357
If it is still in good shape, you can probably get $ 300 from it by selling it to an individual. If you trade it in or sell it to someone for them to resell, expect about one half of that amount. They may have is setting on a shelf for quite a while and then will sell it for about $ 300.
