Cindy C: how important is it to know algebra to be able to do geometry?
My daughter is in 9th grade geometry and has not had algebra. She is having a difficult time. Her counselor says that you do not need algebra to do geometry. She says it is a different kind of math and that’s why the 9th graders have trouble with it.

You definitely need to do algebra to do geometry.
I tutor students in my spare time, so if your daughter needs help reviewing algebra, I’d be more than happy to assist (email is enabled in my Y!A account). You can also try getting a local tutor.
The thing with math is that it’s all about logic flow. Geometry classes are structured assuming that students have had Algebra – even if they seem totally different at first.
It’s like when you are trying to figure out your expenses for the month and make an arithmetic error – you’re answer is incorrect because of the error. All conclusions you make about your expenses, whether you’ve over- or under-calculated, are affected. (e.g. “Do we have enough money for a trip?”, “Do we have enough money for a new ___?” If you have calculated that you have more money than you really do, you will add more expenses that you can’t afford.)
Basically: If you miss a step, you’ll have problems with later steps.

There isn’t a whole lot of algebra in geometry, so your daughter should be able to do okay. I would still have recommended taking algebra first, though.
The best person to ask about this is her math teacher. He/she would have the best understanding of exactly what a student needs to know in order to do well in the class.
