cvdoherty105: How does the seeding work in tennis tournaments?
In the current US Open tennis tournament, the #1 seed (Federer) is playing the #5 seed (Roddick) in the Quarter Finals.. In straight bracket seedings, the #5 could not meet the #1 until the Semi-Finals. #1 should meet something like an #8 seed in the Quarter-Finals. How does this work?

The seeds are separated equally into the 2 half’s of the draw. The no. 1 & 2 players can’t meet before the finals likewise for the no. 3 & 4 ranked players. The top 4 seeds can’t meet before the finals. This means that Federer can face anyone outside the Top 4 in the quarters. Roddick was the 5th seed so it was possible. There was a 25% chance they would meet at that stage. Federer won by the way, 7-6 7-6 6-2. Andy played as well as he could.
Thanks for question and God Bless…
