As a societal norm, a family is considered as a husband, a wife and children who are off-spring of both the husband and wife.
However, there are variations of that theme, obviously.
Some people are currently attempting to couch their sexual orientation into the definition of a family unit.
For them, a family unit can be defined and described in a personal manner. They can define a family to be whatever suits their fancy.
But, as in other aspects of life, societal norms define family units, not individuals.
