jps: How do you reply to “We’re still talking to other candidates” at the end of a job interview?
It could be true they are still talking to other candidates or are “still in the interview process with other applicants.” But it could be a test to see how you react, or it it could be just ole B.S. because they’re really not interested in you.
What would be a good reply statement or question to these “other candidates” claims? I am trying to say in so many words, “Why do you have to continue? What is about my candidacy that makes you want to continue searching? Why can’t we move onto the next round of interviews?”

I ran into this same situation once. Now what I am about to suggest IS risky and may not be the best route. I had a job interview with a plasma company. Now the interview went great. I did my research on the company and praised them on their accolades including a new drug which had just been approved and came to market.
Near the end of the interview both of us had determined we had no more questions for each other, and I asked blatantly, “When can I start?” to which he replied with the other candidates question.
Therefore, I took action and was almost pushy. I replied “So I’ll see you Monday?” He laughed it off but I then told him I was not kidding and would show up the following Monday which I did. He was so impressed with my brash and brave actions that I actually got hired.
But then again, it does take some guts and a little bit of swagger to pull that off ;).
Answer by ShirleyYou could say you look forward to hearing from them and say you will follow up with a phone call in a day or two. Don’t forget to send a thank you.Answer by spice
Well what i told them was what the above person said, that i am happy to of had the chance to meet them and that i will be looking forward to hearing back from them. And i got a call a few hours after i had the interview. (that was for my job at a theme park)
I recently got hired as a sales associate at old navy and i was hired instantly, i was confident, bubbly, outgoing and friendly and i did not talk to them as if i was nervous.. i talked to them like they were my best friends, and i think once people see that they can connect with you they like you and hire you. IT always seems to work. So i did not get the whole “were still talking to other candidates thing” but if i did i would of done the same thing i did in my last interview with my previous job, simply say i am happy to of had the chance to of been interviewd by them and i am really looking forward to hearing back from them. I also usually ask them if there is a number i need to call just in case they dont end up calling.. and they would write it down (just in case they dont call) and if they dont cal (which luckily hasnt happend to me) then i would call them back to see whats up.
U got to be pushy cause u can bet your bottoms that the next person is eager and pushy to get this job and will go to great lengths to get it. U cant be weak and let things happen, u got to make it happen.
I wish you the best with your job search, i been there and its tough cause at this time alot of people are not hiring (I do consider myself lucky that i found a store that was hiring) they usualy start hiring for the summer around May. but ya good luck!
