How do you know if an apt listing is a scam?

Lizara: How do you know if an apt listing is a scam?
I look at the apt listings on craigslist for other states (because I’m considering relocating). Some of these apts have photos and look very nice.

But how do you know if you are being scammed or not? A scam can even be set up to have you view one of the apts, fill out paperwork, lay out money, etc., and in the end you get ripped off.

How can I check to make sure I’m not being ripped off?

I would look around on Craigslist to see what is available and to get an idea of how much rent is in the area, but I would still go through a reputable property manager to actually do a lease.
