If I were to write a book, what should I do to get it published? As a writer, do you have control of what the design of the book will be? What if it were a coffee table book where design is integral to the book, do you retain more control then?

you have more control if you self publish. go to the website below and they can help you discover the difference between traditional publishing (which is very hard) or self publishing.

As an author, once you are done writing your book.. I personally write mine on the computer.. There are many online publishers you can send it to and get it published! Yes, you have SOME say on the design of the book, but not much over the font and things like that. You can choose your illustrator, though.

Send the first 3 chapters to an agent. If they’re interested they’ll talk to the publishers. If they’re not interested in represnting you, send the chapters to another agent. Lather, rinse, repeat.

There are about three main routes you can take today. One is a blind submission to a publishing house. Pretty tough. Second, you can land an publishing agent and hope they can put your manuscript into the right hands – you might be able to find an agent locally or on-line. Third, self publish on-line or through a local printer. You must register your work with the us copyright office – get that squared away first – I think it is still $ 35 bucks to get your copyright filed and it’s fairly quick (about two months turnaround). Secure the copyright prior to submitting your work anywhere. If you get an agent or publisher interested contact a lawyer to review your contract so you don’t get screwed on royalties – good luck.

Go to the library where they will probably have a book of publishing companies. Contact the ones who you would like to publish your book. Ask if you can have some control over the design. I think you can control that, because they’ll probably ask you if you approve it.

You have very little control over cover design; there are stock pictures that the design team of the publishing house will use. You can pick and choose among the different cover designs, but you don’t get complete creative control in the least.

As for publishing, buy a “Writers Market” book to help you understand who’s buying what, for how much, and what’re your chances of publication. It will be more help than any advice on here. It’s a long process. Get an agent. Good luck.
