Sebastian L: How do the statistics on contraception work?
Statistics say that condoms have a 2% failure rate. I was wondering if this applies to each time you have sex or if the number applies to frequent coitus. Because if there is a 2% failure rate every time then 2 out of 100 times would end in pregnancy, which doesn’t sound right.
What I’m trying to say is : does a 2% failure rate mean that if I use a condom every time I have sex there is a 2% chance of me becoming a dad throughout my entire life or does it mean there is a 2% chance of me becoming a dad every single time I have sex? Because the latter would mean that having sex more than once would put the chance of failure above 2%

It means that, for every 100 women using them properly for regular intercourse, 2 will fall pregnant within a year. It doesn’t mean they’ll onyl work for 98% of the time for you personally, if that makes sense xx

Firstly the 2% failure rate is if you use condoms perfectly.
It means that in a year (assuming regular sex) if condoms are used perfectly every time there is a 2% chance that there will be a pregnancy.
The normal failure rate for condoms is not 2% though it is 15%. This means that if 100 women used condoms for a year 15 would get pregnant.
This is because most people do not use them perfectly. People forget to squeeze the teat while putting them on, do not always use the proper lubricant, do not exit quickly enough after finishing, do not hold onto the condom while exiting/changing position….
It means that if a hundred couples uses only that contraceptive method for one year, two couples will conceive before the end of the year. So it’s for one year of use, not one time.
