dietrich: How do people dance at an american wedding?
I have been asked to be a date at a christian wedding in NYC in a month. I am from Africa and have no idea how couples dance at wedding receptions in America. Is there a specific style I must learn? Also, I’ve seen the ‘slow dance’ in movies, where couples basically stand still, is this the style of couple dancing? Do couples also dance to faster/more upbeat songs, or are those freestyle?
Please help, I really like the girl and must make a really good impression!

polka wearing laderhosen would be a good idea
It depends on the music. Just go with the flowAnswer by caroline7271
When your talking about couples basically standing still, I think your referring to what some would call “the rocking circle” 🙂 Its not hard.
There is no basic rule as to how you dance at an american wedding. Its not a whole lot different than dancing at weddings across Europe.
Chances are, this girl invited you because she likes you and not because shes going to rate your dance skills 🙂
Watch for a few minutes at the reception and you will see what everyone else is doing.
Dont worry. You will be fine.
It varies from wedding to wedding, but just watch what other people are doing and you’ll be fineAnswer by planner
if it is a strictly christian wedding with the reception in the church, chances are there will not be any dancing.
but if it is a normal american wedding, there will be regular fast dancing, slow dancing (what you saw as shuffling about, barely moving and which most girls consider very boring…so if you know how to do a proper waltz or foxtrot…go for it)..and they may do some line dances or salsa. very easy to catch on to if you don’t know it.
the fact that you care enough about it to ask this question shows that you will be a good date for this girl. have fun.
