I want to be able to connect to my computer at work which is behind a sonicwall tz180. I have an available ip address for it and i think i know how to do it but i wanted to make sure. So i just basically forward the ip through the firewall to the lan ip address for that computer right? How do i setup the computer to accept a remote desktop connection?

yes you need an external IP to get to it. ping it from a command line on the outside to be sure its there. To enable it on the PC go to Control Panel > System > Remote

there is a post on here a few before yours that explains how to set up on a LAN. follow my instructions in that post. once you conferm you can do it in the LAN then all you need to do is Nat the traffice from the outside interface to the Computer you want to connect to

1) compture hosting the RDP needs Static Local IP
192.0.0.8

2) add entry into the sonic wall something to the effect of this

assuming outside address is 10.10.10.10

nat (inside,outside) 192.0.0.8 UDP 3389 10.10.10.10 UDP 3389

that will work on a cisco box but on your Sonic i’m not sure the exact command but this the same idea. nat the traffic destend to the outside interface on the 3389 UDP port to the local static ip on the 3389 UDP port

you have to port forward port 3389 on the firewall and if windows firewall is enabled allow mstsc / remote desktop through the windows firewall.

Also have remote desktop enabled on both machines.

The other alternative is to have a version of VNC installed on both machines, tight vnc is a really good one and there are other varieties of vnc out there… like real vnc etc.
