If I were you, first I would give it to someone who will read it a bit more objectively.Answer by Damsel
If you want it professionally published, get a copy of Writer’s Market 2008 and look up the publishers in there. They also outline what sorts of things you need to do to get it ready to submit to a publisher.
If you want to self-publish it, but not spend a lot of money to do it, you could try a website like lulu.com
Answer by exile_from_groggsIt helps being famous. If you are famous, you can use your celebrity to get a publishing contract, regardless of the quality of your writing …..
Assuming that doesn’t apply, unfortunately, the fact that people who you know or who have asked say that they like what you have written is of little real value. It is very hard to get an honest critical opinion from people who value you as a friend or relation, and who might be concerned about upsetting you. If you can get a reader for a publisher to read it, he won’t be bothered by that; he will simply be thinking to himself, “Can I sell enough copies of this to get my money back” (or, more realistically, “… to make loads of money”).
There are websites through which you can pay to have your book published. These are the latest incarnation of vanity publishing, although they probably won’t cost you so much. However, I assume that’s not really what you are looking for; you’d like it published the traditional way. What I’d recommend to achieve this is first trying to get an agent. If you get a book published, you would pretty much need one anyway. And if you have an agent, they will deal with the soul-destroying rejection slips for you, and will also provide a hopefully constructive critical voice in relation to what you have written.
Names and addresses of publishers, agents and so on can be found in “The Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook”, which also includes a large amount of other material for aspiring authors.
Answer by T MYou need to revise and edit your manuscript to make sure that you didn’t use the passive voice or use too many adverbs or too many dialog tags and other things like that that can weaken the writing.
Once you have a revised and edited manuscript you need to purchase Writer’s Market 2008. It contains the listings of agents and publishers across the country as well as valuable info on how to query and submit to agents and publishers. It is /extremely/ important that you write a phenomenal query letter. I can’t stress that enough.
If you are dead serious about becoming published I recommend reading through my starred questions for more detailed information on writing great query letters and becoming published. I also recommend reading professional literary agent Nathan Bransford’s blog of Curtis Brown, Ltd. literary agency: https://blog.nathanbransford.com/ Read through all of the archives as well as the archives of the other agents’ blogs that link through his site. There is a lot of information that you need to know about /before/ you submit to any agents or publishers. Spend the next month reading through these blogs and the other links I posted in my starred questions so that you can make the best informed decisions for yourself.
