First off you can’t just take the dog. Legally you have to make an attempt to find the owner FIRST. So tell your cousin to take the dog to the shelter. If the dog is trained and friendly he is someone’s pet and they are probably looking for him.
Also you cannot persuade your father he either wants a dog or he doesn’t.Dogs are also expensive to have and take care of no matter WHAT breed and size they are. How do you even know you can afford a dog right now?

Start by telling him all the disadvantages in having a dog, so that he will see your responsible. Then tell him taking care of a dog teaches responsiblity and carefulness. After that give him a hug and tell him that you will love the dog more than any other animal EVER!

First you need to be able to care for a dog. Is someone going to be home with the dog, or will the house be empty 7 hours a day, 5 days out of the week? Is there enough money to pay for normal expenses? Dogs are very expensive to keep, with the appropriate food, yearly shots and vet exams, and money for any kind of doggy emergency. Dogs cost several hundred dollars a year, at best, and usually way more.
Second, you can ask your dad if the dog can just stay with you while you look for its true home. This is the time to make posters, put a FOUND ad in the paper, etc. Show your dad that you are responsible, and take care of your new pet with lots of exercise. You can’t just keep someone else’s dog, but you may or may not find the original owner and, if you do, your dad may have warmed up to the idea of having a dog around by this time. If he sees that you are responsible enough for a dog, and has enough extra money to care for one, then it will be much more likely that you will actually be able to have one.

For all people and animals, part of life is death. If hes afraid to get animals because of the death issue, he with never be able to experiance the joy of having one.
Depending on the size, an apartment is usually fine, just make sure the get enouph exercise.
If none of this works, make sur this dog get a kind loving home! and good lucck to you and your dad, you seem like good dog people!
