Leo S: How do I keep my house safe during this years hurricane season?
We got hit by hurricane Rita almost 2 years ago and we still have a blue tarp on our roof. We are renting and the owner of the house didn’t have insurance on the house so we stll have a blue tarp covering it. I’m worried about this years hurricane season. I can’t afford to move and I’m trying my best to safe up to get it fixed but in the meantime, how do I keep my house safe? No jokes please. I’m still trying to get mold spores out of the house.
Sorry to hear about all of that. FEMA said we had significant damage but said they couldn’t help us because I forgot to include my middle name when I signed my name during the inspection of my house. They caontacted me 8 months after the hurricane, after is started raining in our house and leaks were everywhere and then they mentioned they could have helped us but I left out my middle name on my signature. I had to show proof who I was about 3 times and finally I got it straight but then I recieved a letter in the mail from FEMA saying I missed the deadline and they couldn’t help us fix the roof. So now I am saving up to have it fixed.

Flashlights with Batteries
Buy food that does not need an electic can opener.
Candles with a lighter Purchase cigs.if you smoke.
Jugs of Water.
Get medication refills. Charge up your cell phone.

Leo I have problems with my house too..Fema gave me 800 bucks but that just paid for shingles..I had to nail them down..my eves got messed up I have fasure boards ripped off and need stuff done too. I hope we dont have a bad one hit.Lots of my neighbors who live closer to the water than me have been paying homeowners for 30 years only to find out they didnt have flood insurance.half my neighbors had flooding and the other half had wind. Its a dayum shame insurance will find a way not to pay after you done put in so much to them and now they have canceled policy’s here altogether.anybody that lives below I-10 cant get any insurance.them dang insurance company’s are fair weather friends and now they have forced all the citizens of Alabama to have car insurance. mandatory,well my car was ran into and totaled by the insurance folks and you know what? they gave me $ 1800 dollars for a car I paid 12000 dollars for.And I MUST have insurance..whats the world coming too? oh yeah now I remember who’s in charge! LOL! thats another subject.

start early, purchasing plywood to board up windows and doors to preserve glass and protect family from what might come through. Purchase generator, candles, solar or windup radios, stockpyle canned food and water. You may want to invest in some type of fuel heating unit. First aid kit is a must. Store some clothing for each family member in your shelter. Keep important documents handy, billfold, checkbook ect. Just plan ahead and be smart. You know you cant stop it so prepare for it.

I cant imagine the devistation, remember what you needed the day after and try to accomidate for that.

curious- you say you are renting the house–
if so you should not get any help from fema to repair the roof
fema pays repair moneys to the owners of the property- or they are supposed to
you can claim personal items though
food lost
clothes
furniture
and more
i am sorry about your misfortune ,,I worked disaster assistance for Hurricane Ivan, and I saw first hand what people like you have to go through
to answer your question
you can not keep your house safe from a hurricane,,just be ready to leave in time to miss the storm
dont take the chance of loosing a loved one and try to weather the storm
