I am looking for ideas (working ideas). I want to hook two v-8 gas engines together to one transmission and I want to use it for everyday use too. The problem is I am having truoble coming up with a way to link the two engine together. There’s no aftermarket ready made part that I can find that will do this. I am still looking on tractor pull forums and machinery forums, but no luck yet. I could build one and I am looking for a working design. if anybody out there has a “pliable” ,meaning something that actually could work, then an answer would be appreciated. Thanks.

Your downfall will be space…what vehicle are you going to find that will allow you the space you need to fit 2 V-8 Engines inside. Aside from that, I’m not an engineer, so I probably won’t have the best thoughts.

Imagining you have a vehicle with the room for it, side by side would be an option, although you will have the custom build a very sturdy chain run system that will allow the crankshaft of both to run a main “drive” shaft mounted center that would run to the transmission.

In line would be possible, finding a way to link the crankshaft from the front one to the front end of the rear one, but then you will be keeping the rear one from having a viable cooling system.

There are a few things that will kill you thought.

1) 2 engine running separately of each other will idle at different speeds, thus you stand a chance to ruin both, if 1 gives out.

2) Starting, you’ll be hard pressed to find a way to start both engines at the same time, hard to say if both will even fire and self sustain them self at the same time after the same time being turned over.

3) The throttle. You will have to find a way for both engines to respond to the exact same amount of fuel in the exact same manner with no variation in the engine speed. Also finding an exact way to set it up so that 1 pedal provides the same amount of throttle to both engines will be hard.

4) These are just a few of the MANY problems you will need to overcome, but I think anything is possible.

Not sure what you are doing with this, but what I have seen on pulling tractors is a short, splined shaft that connects the flywheel of one engine to the harmonic balancer of the other engine. Keep in mind that on most of those pulling tractors, they don’t run water pumps, therfore, the engines are very close to one another. From the way I read your question, you are going to be using water pumps, so you need to have a little distance between your engines. I would say you would just need to make a couple of flanges, one for the rear of the front engine, one for the front of the rear engine, and connect them with a short driveshaft with a good, tough u-joint at each end. Or, if you can get everything aligned perfectly, you could use a chain coupler on a couple of short shafts.

I don’t know if this will answer your question.

But, take a look at the project Jeep that was shown last fall. They used 2 v8 engines. One front, one rear.

I don’t know where you would find any of the design photos. But, it might be worth a look.

What I am really curious about….what on earth do you want 2 engines for, for everyday use? You can easily get a 500 hp v8 that will hold up to everyday use. And provide more power than you’ll ever need.

Unless you’re just wanting the WOW factor LOL

Otherwise…Direct connect between the engines….check the tractor pull guys.

do you want these engines side by side or back to back?… the biggest problem is the drive shift…..even then there would have to be a special trans made to handle that kind of force..the expense would be way up there. I think it would be more benefit to wreck our brain on something that would be a better help to more people…….but if this is what you want I’m sure we can come up with something…the world is full of smart people……….
