derek: smiling in stead of saying “bless you?”?
just before, i was in line at a bookstore, and i sneezed. just a normal sneeze…so i would figure that the girl who was on line in front of me would just say “bless you” but instead, she just turned back, looked at me, and smiled for a few seconds without saying anything…….why do you think she did that?

She clearly hated you at that moment.

It was just an optimistic acknowledgment. She didn’t think to say bless you, not everyone does. It’s nice of her to smile. Things like that can make someones day.

Too afraid to do it the polite way and say bless you to a stranger. Some people are offended nowadays by saying bless you because it used to be “God bless you”.
She also may have just thought you sneezed funny

The term ” bless you” was originally ” God bless you.” In certain religions, they don’t believe that you should say things like that for a sneeze. So, instead of saying anything, but didn’t want to be impolite, she smiled.
On the other hand, she’s probably an atheist. Who knows.

She probably learned a long time ago that some people get offended when you say bless you. I stopped saying that to people because I got too many odd and mean looks when I used to say that.
I know pretend like I didn’t hear it.
God bless you.

Maybe she encountered people who were offended when she said “bless you” to them for sneezing, or she herself was someone offended by that phrase. Just smiling, though smiles are friendly, is a bit of a weird substitute though. I think a more polite substitute for “bless you” would be “are you alright?” or “hope you don’t catch a cold” or “hope you get well soon” depending on the nature of the sneeze. It still shows concern for the well being of the person who sneezed without acknowledging a god or the supernatural. Hope this helps, and hope you don’t catch a cold 😉
It sounds like this lady was a Jehovah’s Witness. Jehovah Witnesses believe that only 144,000 people will go to heaven. And as i’m sure you know, when you sneeze your soul gets expelled from your body through your nose. She was happy that you lost your soul because that increases her odds of getting into heaven. You just lost your chance, sunshine.
