How do I “format” (completely erase) my hard drive?

teksonn: How do I “format” (completely erase) my hard drive?
I’m am updating my computer, so I bought a program disk for “Windows XP”. I already have “Windows ME” on my computer but I need to know how to completely erase my hard drive so that I can install XP. I would take it to the guy who usually does work on my computer, but he wants a $ 50 installation fee and all I need to know is how to “format” my hard disk as the installation is fairly simple. Thanks to all.

Answer by APPLEJACK
To completely erase a hard drive, therefore, you need to not only mark the sections on the hard drive as ones that can be overwritten, you need to overwrite them completely. One way to do this, without special tools, is to use the built in disk utilities in Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux, to format the hard drive. Although not complete, a Full Format will largely overwrite everything, ensuring a fair level of erasure. This is often enough for people who just want to pass their computers on to charity, a friend, or to recycle them, and don’t have any truly sensitive documents on them. from: How do i erase a hard drive?

Drop the Winxp cd in the cd drive, boot to the cd, choose New Install. The drive will be reformatted and windows installed.

YOU CAN WIPE THE DRIVE WITH DISKPART

to run diskpart click START –> RUN –> a box will come up.. in the box type “cmd” without the quote. A black box will now come up.. in that black box I want you to type “diskpart” and hit enter.. after that type in “delete disk 0” and hit enter. Now your hard drive will be “erased” as far as bios is concerned.

or if you want to “completely erase” you can use dban
