If you and someone else apply for an apartment and one person has lower credit, what does that mean for your chances?

The landlord is likely to go with the person whose credit shows they pay their bills on time.
It could mean that the person with bad credit may require a cosigner. And if unavailable, they may require a larger deposit, instead of first month, last month and security, they may require the last TWO months.
