Fly in the Ointment: How did conservative Christians use the Bible to justify slavery?
Before the Civil War ended slavery the Conservative Christians based in South justified slavery into religion and some say they used the Bible to help them. Where does it say anything about slavery in the Bible and which parts of Bible did they use to justify it. Are they doing it today with any other issues such as Gay marriage?

Man and even Christians have the disease of Eve , the ability to believe a lie for greed sake .
And God , never wanted man to treat people as slaves , the were servants , and we freed after 7 years of service .
And these people were treated as family . Far better than today’s civilized CEO’s treat the average worker , and steal and cheat them .
And I think God allowed this not because it was his will , but because of the greedyness of man .
Just like God allowed a bill of divorse in the old testement because of the evilness of man .
Answer by Not a Real DoctorYou’re assuming that the politically conservative denominations dominating the southern United States today were around before the civil war? The southern plantation owners who supported slavery would hardly be described as “conservative,” much less of the modern Southern Baptist variety.Answer by spooks n stuff

Answer by witnessofJesusthere is NO WAY a few paragraphs can answer this question.
it is written that God told moses that a certain tribe in aftrica would not be allowed to obtain the chosen people “covenant” and God said to refuse ALL of them for “ten” generations.
it also has to do with the mark of Cain. it also has to do with superstion and false interpretation.
but the BIBLE DOES teach that slavery is divine, but then again, it says that people who are sold into slavery are releases in the jubilee, even all debts and everything is wiped clean every 50 years.
Answer by WewackywoohooTHE BIBLE SAYS:
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
THIS IS WHY I WENT OVER TO THE DARK SIDE…LOL
Answer by IsadoraThese are a few examples:
Leviticus 25:44-46
Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever.
Ephesians 6:5
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ.
Colossians 3:22
Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.
Titus 2:9-10
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
1 Peter 2:18
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
Check out the link in the “Source”. In a nutshell, Noah gets wasted and his son Ham found him naked. Ham ran out and told his brothers, who then modestly and politely covered their father. When Noah found out that Ham had made a big scene, he cursed Ham’s child, Canaan:
Genesis 9:25-27: “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japeth live in the tents of Shem and may Canaan be his slave’. ”
Christians traditionally believed that Canaan had settled in Africa. The dark skin of Africans became associated with this “curse of Ham.” Thus slavery of Africans became religiously justifiable.
Answer by the_immortal_gila_monsterThere is place in the old testament where some guy sinned, and god punished him by saying that all his descendants would serve his brother’s decedents… I think the brothers name was Japeth. Once people claimed (without any biblical support) that all blacks were descended from this guy. Also, the Israelites sometimes took slaves of people they conquered, and let people with debts sell themselves into slavery.Answer by Pirate AM™
The pervading thought at the time was that the Africans were a inferior species. This can be seen clearly in some of Lincoln’s lesser known quotes. Heck, even my wife’s grandmother (80+) is fairly racist.
However, there are several passages in Leviticus that talk about how to treat slave, how to free them, how to make them life long slave, and how to free a female slave if they have your children or not.
The scripture, also in Leviticus, that talks about two men having sex can also be translated as it is wrong for two men to have sex in a woman’s bed, this illustrates the problem with translations, especially those attempted after 2500 years.
