tom d: How can I get a new laptop to recognize an old laptops hard drive?
I need to use a hard drive with windows XP on from an old laptop in a newer laptop. The newer laptop does not recognize the hard drive from the old laptop. How can I get the laptop to recognize the old laptops hard drive?
The hard drive from the newer laptop does not work properly so I want to use the hard drive from an old laptop that already has windows XP installed on it (drivers will not be a problem).
The hard drive does work and should work in the old laptop.

Connect the cables from the laptop to the old hard drive. If you did that, or the cables doesn’t fit, you’re out of luck, as far as I know.
You’re going to have to interrupt the boot sequence by hitting whatever key it says to hit then you have to reconfigure the boot disk in the settings for booting up the computer.
You have to tell it to use the external hard drive from the old computer insteand of the new one.
Answer by Joe WEnter the BIOS settings by Starting the computer and tapping repeatedly the F1, F2 or Del key.
Do nothing except “Save and Exit”

If the old hard drive is from a different computer it will not work well (if at all) in another computer because the motherboard, and hardware parts are different.
If you want to get files off a hard drive you can use a connector like in the first link.
You should first go to the website of the hard drive maker and download a diagnostic utility to check the health of the drives.
