My sister has been in and out of the hospital for the last several years. We have just stepped in to help her, How do we find out if she has filed income taxes for the last several years. You cannot unless you are her conservator/guardian. The IRS will not release individual tax return information to others.

Answer by Common Sense
You can get her to request copies from the IRS.

Answer by Bostonian In MO
You can’t unless you are declared her guardian. You can see if she is willing to sign Forms 4506-T for the relevant tax years to request transcripts of the returns.

Answer by Judy
You can’t. SHE can request transcripts from the IRS though. You only can if she’s declared incompetent and you’re her guardian.

Answer by Max Hoopla
Have her sign a Power of Attorney, Form 2848 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2848.pdf or Tax Information Authorization, Form 8821 IRS will tell you.

Answer by tro
if you know here SS# you can request transcripts for as many years as you like to find out what IRS has on record for her

Answer by StephenWeinstein
The best option is for her to sign a Form 4506-T requesting either a transcript of what she filed (if she did file) or verification that she did not file. If she cannot or will not sign the form, then you need to get either a power of attorney or a court order allowing you to legal documents for her, and then file the Form 4506-T with the documentation that you are allowed to do that.

Answer by Tax Chopper
IRS does not disclose or release any information about tax payer to a third party unless a power of attorney being submitted or a Federal warrant issued by Judge.
However, you may do one of the followings:
Ask your sister to let you know or show you about her income tax return of certain year.
If she does not remember and she wants to let you know but she could not find it, you may download form 4506T and fill it, then ask your sister to sign it in person, then put your address as returned address.
As soon as the IRS process the form (request) you will get your sister transcript (upon her
signature).
Finally, no way for any one to ask the IRS by phone for Tax year transcript unless the IRS verify the following:
Full name, Date of Birth, Current Address, Filing status. Addition to this, IRS may ask for additional information such as: previous address, total income, number of dependents, full name of spouse and date of birth if married.
Good luck
