Court F: How can I convince my father not to keep his car documents in the trunk?
My father insists on keeping his car’s registration and insurance papers in the trunk. I’ve told him several times that if he gets stopped, an officer is not going to want him to get out of the car to get them. And I would imagine that an officer certainly is not going to want him opening his trunk. Am I right in advising him not to do it? What can I say to convince him that he’s wrong?

It is not illegal to carry the documents in the trunk.
That may raise the suspicion of the officer, but your father will be allowed to open the trunk. I’m sure the officer will accompany him, and may even give him specific instructions on how to open it.
I do not understand his logic for this, as the paperwork does not take up much room. Not only would it be time consuming, but getting out of the car could be a safety issue on a busy road. Maybe you could remind him of that.
Answer by Nancy GWhy is it so important to you to convince your father that he is wrong? I don’t think this has anything to do with the facts that you have stated. This is about control and you appear to be a very demanding and controlling person who intends to badger your father into submission.
Your father is an adult. If he gets stopped by the police he will have to deal with this on his own. It may or may not end up being a problem. Maybe you should just back off.

I keep them in the trunk as well. I had two lots stolen from the glove box over 30 years and if I must carry them, then they are stored safely in the trunk.
I don’t care what an officer might or might not think, I am willing to wait till he gets reinforcements if he so desire. I don’t see what the big deal with the trunk is, in fact if they are suspicious of something that’s the first thing they ask me: OPEN THE TRUNK!
