How can credit card “swiping” theft be prevented/detected?

rahidz2003: How can credit card “swiping” theft be prevented/detected?
So I read this story ) about how an employee of Taco Bell stole credit card info from customers, and I’m wondering how to prevent this sort of thing from happening to me, as I often use my card to buy from fast-food restaurants and other stores. Are there any safeguards I can take?

Thanks 🙂

Some of the steps you can take to prevent this:

1. Register with one of the credit bureaus to monitor your credit.
a. www.experion.com
b. www.equifax.com
2. Check your credit card statements carefully.
3. When paying with your card ensure that the card stays in you view during the transaction. This lets you see the device being used for the actual payment.

If you find any thing looks suspicious on your credit card statements contact the credit card company immediately to put a freeze on the payments and the card.

Don’t use the drive up and do not hand them your card if possible. Most Fast food places have terminals you can slide. This way you keep the card in your hand. Myself I has always found it faster to go inside.

This is the reason the US and other countries need to get chip and pin. This way all countries can eliminate the magnetic strip. If this happen fraud would go way down. The Uk is still having the problem because it still has the magnetic strip on the card, so you can still use it internationally without a pin.

The US has a problem because of the way are combo debit cards work. It can work both as a credit (Sign for your purchase) and as a debit (You enter a pin). Some banks charge for pin purchases.
