VenusPride: How bad does a cartilage piercing in your upper ear hurt?
How bad does a cartilage piercing in your upper ear hurt? I want to get one of those bars that connect two cartilage piercings and I actually have my nose pierced and my ears triple pierced which didn’t hurt at all but I’ve heard mixed stories about cartilage piercings. Thoughts? Suggestions?

If done correctly it should not be so bad..besides what is your tolerance for pain that is the real question..~~glAnswer by Laibach
I don’t know but why bother to find out?
It’s body mutilation and it looks disgusting.

I had an industrial piercing and it hurt pretty badly, but it wasn’t unbearable. If you really want it, go for it, just take really good care of it while it’s healing.Answer by judith a.

doesnt really hurt at all…just to lay on. I didnt have any problems. They burn for the day of the piercing, of course. They take a little bit longer to heal than lower ear piercings, but other than that they’re not bad at all! 🙂Answer by nervousenergy73
mine hurt for a while actually, but my friend that got hers done at the same time, didn’t seem to hurt her at all!! Look a little longer to heal than my ears but now I don’t even know its there!!Answer by dara_ishbu
Because the sensation of pain is relative, unique to each person who experiences it, it is impossible to determine if you would ‘hurt’ upon receiving a cartilage piercing.Answer by dolce
Do you mean an industrial? Any kind of cartilidige won’t really hurt getting it done, but it’ll hurt afterwards. Just be ready to keep it super-clean and you should be just fine. Also try not to put the phone on that ear and avoid sleeping on it.Answer by nicole_cutie23
the second hole in the lower part of my ear hurt wors. the cartlige didnt really hurt that badAnswer by [email protected]
hurts like heck,,, and mine got infection and had to go to er to get bar out , they call it a cod flower ,, because that what it resemble it ouch!!Answer by untamed_soul
I can’t really describe the pain as I never experienced it myself. Though I did watch my girlfriend get hers done for her industrial piercing and she claimed it only hurt as bad as it did because the piercer slipped. I knew from her expression that it hurt so expect to feel a little pain.
Her piercing also had to be removed because the skin grew up around the piercing and it was starting to irritate her so she eventually took it out.
My advice is to go for it. If it hurts it hurts… your not going to die from it and if it’s something that you really want, your not going to get it without a little sweat and blood. I got my tattoo on my stomach and while it hurt I’m not going to let it stop me from getting another one.
Pain is often times symbolic… and you can’t earn to have a piercing or a tattoo without having a story of how it hurt.
Answer by tu madredude. everyone is lying,

not at all it feels a little hot after but youll be fineAnswer by jessica paek
i got my upper cartilage pierced twice and i got my mid done on my other ear.
both times it was really uncomfortable and it swells up and you can’t sleep on it for a few weeks.
but it doesn’t hurt so much as its just really uncomfortable, but thats probably because my friend did them for me and she had no clue what to do.
i recommend that you do it professionally, i can imagine it wouldn’t hurt at all.
just ice it afterwards.
Answer by Bubbles36You mean industrial or scaffolding. If your too scared get it frozen, it just kinda hot tingles then. I’m not trying to scare you but when i had mine done, they couldn’t get the toughest one through ( bit closest to your head ). And he had to shove it through and it got kinda weird. Now its fine though. I didn’t put the bar in in the end, i liked it better without it looks cuter that way. Do your research first and happy piercing!!!! xx xxAnswer by lynsey h
i have the industrial bar… the bottom piercing doesn’t hurt much at all. but i’m not going to lie the top one did… not enough that i would say not to do it though. it’s mostly just uncomfortable after.. not being able to sleep on it for a couple of weeks. it will probably be worse than you other piercings though as it is a lot thicker cartialge there…Answer by Sonya A
First things first – you should NEVER, EVER have a cartilage piercing done with a gun. Even the makers of piercing guns (Inverness and Studex) state right in their instructions that they should NEVER be used on anything other than your earlobes because of the trauma to the skin and damage to cartilage that it causes. Don’t just go for “who has the cutest earrings” – wait until they’re healed!!!
Cartilage can shatter (much like bone would) and with a gun piercing, will take far longer healing and much longer pain.
There are other reasons that you should never be pierced (at all) with a piercing gun, but we’d be here all day – for more info on that, go to the Association of Professional Piercer’s website at www.safepiercing.org for more info on that (check out the FAQ).
All in all, do you REALLY want someone who’s been “trained” by watching a 15 minute video that doesn’t even MENTION cartilage? I doubt it.
There is no numbing that you can do for cartilage – and even so, if there were, they’d have to stick a needle in your ear in order to numb it. Topical ointments only numb the skin.
Helix (upper ear cartilage) piercings are generally one of the longest healing times for any body piercing, being 6 months to a full year or longer for a good solid heal – THAT is with a needle piercing. It’s usually near twice the healing time for a gun piercing due to increased trauma.
The reason for this – although there is sufficient bloodflow to the area, the blood vessels are far too small to transport oxygen to the upper ear. Oxygen is needed to heal wounds, and since this is not an option, the healing time increases and you have to care for it much more than any other traditional piercing.
And last, but not least, unfortunately pain is relative to the person getting pierced – which means that some people will find it painful, while others will not. In general, a helix piercing, because it’s through cartilage, will be slightly more painful than most other body piercings.
Answer by The Muffin ManIt doesn’t hurt, I have 4 helix piercings.. and the piercings process didn’t hurtAnswer by daria l
I thought that I would feel the worst pain ever, but it’s really not that bad. It does take longer to heal. Maybe in the 3rd week. you’ll feel a little discomfort; for the most part, you can ace right through this. Just make sure that you purchase some sensitive ear earrings. You’ll have to retain the starter / surgical posts for at least 12 weeks. It is not like getting your earlobe pierced. As long as antiseptic is used twice daily, you shouldn’t have a problem.
