A high casualty rate. There were 62,000 deaths, and about 140,000 severely wounded; which adds up to 200,000 lost; out of an army of half a million. Nearly 1 in 2.
The attempt to sovle this problem was ‘conscription’, or the draft. Prime Minister Borden reasoned that if there more people in the army, they could protect each other better; leading to a lower casualty rate.
