Batman and Superman. Spiderman is cool too. I got costumes for each. At work on Halloween I go as Clark Kent, in my suit, with the shrit undone, with the tights underneth showing, cape hanging out, glasses, and the “s” curl in my hair. It’s pretty funny.

It was a my 4 year old little brother. We dressed him up in my sister’s clothes and put a girlie little hat on him. All the neighbors thought he was a cute visiting relative. He got more candy than all of us…..and 20 years later we still laugh about that.

My favourite was a spider. I was that damn spider for several years in a row. It was this awesome purple belly-piece with foam in it (so it was comfy) and it had black foam arms attached with string to my arms. So cute.

Lot’s Wife won me a first place prize in a contest once…

I’ve also enjoyed “B movie girl” – wearing a fancy dress, long white gloves, glittery jewelry (I very rarely wear girlie clothes anyway – so it’s always a shock in itself) – ghost out my face, and apply a nasty gash on my neck.

There were no costumes when I was a boy, you had to make do with one of your mothers old dresses or something similar and a burnt cork to blacken your face. A touch of your mother’s lipstick put the finishing touches. However, there were other things:

Halloween Barmbrack.

At Halloween we had Barmbrack,
The memory, it takes me back,
To happy days of innocence,
When a bag of sweets cost just two pence.

The dressing up, from door to door,
‘Apples or nuts’ the children implore,
With faces black from cold burnt ash,
Still there next day, after a wash.

The Barmbrack was a special treat,
It looked too good to dare to eat,
The prizes cooked deep within,
The thought it made my young head spin.

A small brass ring that shone like gold,
The secret that its finding told,
That you would be the first to wed,
If you clung to it all night in bed.

A matchstick meant you would see the light,
That you would know wrong from right,
But best was last, a thruppenny bit,
That you’d be rich, if you found it.

Such silly things, to a small boy,
Used to bring unending joy,
Now all that’s left is the memory,
Of the beautiful times that used to be.

I went as a girl in an outhouse! Took a large box, cut a door in one side (with a moon window) and put another box inside around my waist for the “seat”. added some panty hose stuffed to look like legs complete with panties and a skirt around the “ankles” of the fake legs.

My mom made me a smurfette costume. I had the little white hat with yellow yarn and I even had a little blue ball for a tail. She painted all the skin that was showing with blue paint. I was so cute.

My sister & I dressed up as Milli Vanilli… We had mops on our heads & had dark foundation make up on. We even did thier dance from “girl you know it’s true” music video. We got extra candy that year! lol The funny thing, is that we were little white girls who dressed up like grown black guys & no one was mad at us (that we know of). We lived in Cleveland, Ohio then, & were the only white family on the block, so I guess thats why we were accepted?

i loved being a popples. it was the greatest costume ever. i wore it to school and attempted to drink my chocolate milk with my mask on. don’t worry i had a straw. anyways, it didn’t work very well. i didn’t want to take it off it was that cool.
