: What is a good science experiment for fossil fuels for a 6th grade middle schooler?
I need to think of a good experiment that I can do in class for my teaching topic. I’m in the 6th grade Mathematics/ Science/ Computer Science program at my school. My teaching topic is on fossil fuels and global climate change. So I need a good idea for a science experiment I can do in class that is related to my teaching topic and that it won’t take long.

Get a HUGE container – If possible a 55 gallon drum and fill it with water…
Now that should last a very, very long time…
Now get a graph of the oil consumption used since 1859 in the US…
If you can’t find a graph you can estimate it by using a 7% growth rate per year – or a doubling of use every 10 years.
So 1859 -1869 is, say, a pint – so…
18691879 1 Quart
18791889 2 Quarts
18891899 1 gal
18991909 2 gal
19091919 4 gal
19191929 8 gal
19291939 16 gal
19391949 32 gal
19491959 oops the drum is empty
19591969
19691979
19791989
19891999
19992009
20092019
Watch the video set below to see the serious consequences of the simple exponential function….
By the way, if you place two pennies on the first square of chess board and then 4 on the second square and 8 on the third square and continue doubling until the 64th square – the height of the last stack of pennies will almost reach to THE NEAREST STAR…
