here is a nice tip every fall lay about 3-5 inches of leaves or news paper to keep the ground from getting hit with the winter elements.. spring time pull it up so your flowers can breath and grow!

what you do is plant some annuals, the cold wether won’t huhrt them, then, plant some plants that bloom in the summer and some that bloom in winter… the actual plants really depend on what part of the US you live in…

Though you may not be able to have flowers in the winter, you can plant evergreens in order to give it color. One thing that every good landscaper strives to do is have plants that will give the yard color all year round. Some pretty evergreens are yew bushes<-(though poisonous berries), Hollies, arborvitae and rhododendrons are excellent choices. If you choose to use hollies make sure you have at least 1 male and females. Only the females will produce the red berries. Rhododenderons have flowers in the summer or spring. You can also experiment with different leaf textures of evergreens. Keep in mind that you must prune them so the weight of the snow will not damage them. Have fun choosing.

We planted some Holly Bushes and now have nice greenery even in the Winter months. They produce the red berries around Christmas and look great.

There are lots of green plants to choose from that can withstand the winter, depending on where you live and how much snow you get. I live in the Pacific Southwest of Canada. We get lots of rain and sometimes snow in the winter. Usually once or twice a year.

I discovered something called Elizah Blue. They look like spiky grass and have a bluish/green colour to them. I really like them. They do well in the summer and don’t seem to be affected by the snow and freezing temps we get sometimes. They are usually low to the ground, but i think there are diff. varieties and some can get really big. I just don’t know if it’s because now i have to put them in pots cuz i have a very selfish upstairs neighbour who has hogged both sides of the yard and a landlord with no backbone. But i digress. I think there are also a plant that looks similar to these, and then from the middle up shoots a feather-like bloom (for lack of a better word). There’s a variety called Feather Reed Grass.

I think a combo of evergreen bushes (and there are a few diff. varieties) and some nice diff. colour (usually green and green/blue variations) ornamental grasses would look really nice. Have fun.
