Depends on the state. It’s a felony in every state in the union to have 9 plants with out a medical marijuana card
@ Adam– Thank you for being so insensitive. We all needed that. As we all know, growing marijuana at any point in a person’s life justifies never seeing one’s own children again. (sarcasm)
Answer by Adamwell first off all i want to point out that he screwed up his life and u will nvr see him again. i also wanna point out not to get your hopes up cuz they’ll probly just let him rot in prison. sorry to break it to ya but have a nice life.Answer by red top

I agree this war on the people( i mean war on “Drugs”) is worthless. Unfortunately cultivating marijuana is a serious offense in the laws eyes. In Mass they have a mandatory 15 years in the penitentiary if convicted.
What About Growing Marijuana In My Own Illinois Home?
Growing marijuana is illegal in Illinois (there are no exceptions for medical marijuana, even with a doctor’s prescription), and the penalties for marijuana cultivation are judged by the number of plants you are raising. “Plants” here is a somewhat vague term, and it can sometimes include very tiny saplings or even budding seeds, so the number of plants determined is often at the discretion of the judge. Raising less than 5 plants will only be classified as a misdemeanor, but can still get you a year in jail. Raising more than 5 plants is a felony, and such the penalties become harsher.
Cultivating between 5 – 20 plants carries a penalty of 1 – 3 years in prison, while cultivating 20 – 50 plants can bring a sentence of 2 -5 years. Both of these penalties are also subject to a $ 25,000 fine. However, as with possession, a first time offender of cultivation (of 50 plants or less) can be given a 24 month probation instead of a jail sentence. If the terms of the probation are kept for that period, the conviction will be expunged.
People raising more than 50 plants, however, do not have this probation option, even for their first offense, and will be sentenced to 3 – 7 years with a $ 100,000 fine.
Answer by KelleThe good new is that the penalty is greater for 12 + plants.
This is a drug possession charge of marijuana which will probably come out to an opportunity for bail and a large fine.Drug rehabilitation, coupled with expensive fines and court costs, is a common penalty for lesser marijuana charges and first-time offenders. It will depend on the judge. There is no mandatory jail time for that offense.
He should get a lawyer.

Answer by Exec Pot Head1 – 3 years and eligible for 24 month probation with first conviction, dismissal of charges upon completion of probation.
Actually – Not a felony every where to have MJ plants – even in a non medical State.
Actually in Illinois 5 plants and under is a misdemeanor.
Here is the thing, kiddo – you can’t be sure this was the reason SWAT came because a house is not raided purely over 9 plants. I know it is not want you want to hear but you have no idea why that house was raided and your friend may just saying what they want the kid to hear or the “story” they will be using.
