teenytiny: Do you think pet stores should not sell dogs or purebred cats?
Even if they get them from local breeders, for the most part everyone hates puppy mills, but what if the pet store only took dogs from small local breeders?

Thats why everyone should go to petsmart .. the cats/dogs they house there are actually from adoption agencies =D
small local irresponsible breeders?
Same thing.
they’re called backyard breeders. just a smaller scaled version of puppy mills.
Pet stores should just not sell ANY dogs or cats. There’s no way that ANY responsible breeder would ever sell to one.
Answer by Dolphin©I think that pet stores should not exist.
Only pet supply stores that sell what the pet store sells besides pets.
I didn’t know that there was such a thing as a purebred cat, they all look the same to me, but different colors.Answer by mcga♥
The pet stores where I live work with the local animal shelters. They bring adoptable pets into the stores. I think it’s the best thing ever.Answer by Nandina (Bunny Slipper Goddess)
They absolutely should not sell puppies and kittens.
People who would give/sell their pups and kits to a pet store to sell are irresponsible breeders who shouldn’t be adding to the pet population.
There’s more to adopting a pet than “walking in with enough cash”. And a pet store will pretty much sell anything to anyone who has enough money.
This is very different from a pet store offering space to a rescue group, because the rescue group has the right to refuse adoption based on screening. Most rescue groups who are in Petsmart around me don’t even do same-day adoptions. You apply, they run the check, and if the adoption is approved you can take the pup/kit home in a few days.
RESPONSIBLE breeders meet prospective owners to make sure that they are the right for the dog/cat and that the dog/cat is right for them.

No, petstores are sick. It does’nt matter what kind of breeder they’re buying from. It’s wrong to breed at all while we have so many homeless dogs and cats dying in shelters.Answer by Stacy
No good breeder is going to give their puppies to a pet store, where anyone (research labs, dog fighters, dog abusers, people who have no idea how much work they are and will dump them) can buy them. Good breeders meet the buyers, do home visits, and background checks.Answer by BMTHESPIAN
Even if pet stores were getting animals from small local breeders it would be BYB and not reputable breeders. No reputable breeder would sell to a pet store. Reputable breeders want to be able to choose for themselves who there puppies go to and have first hand contact with potential buyersAnswer by rjn529
It all depends. Places around the house like the local PetSmart don’t keep the animals actually there, but work with local shelters to have pets come in during the day, return to the shelter at night. Places like this I’m fine with.
However, even small local breeders, if reputable, should not want their dogs in a pet store. They should want to interview the potential new owners, verify their commitment, and long term ability to own a dog before deciding who to sell their dogs to.
Answer by haileybird95im not saying all pet stores are like this , but a great percent just buy from puppy mills . and who wants to fund places like that ? if you want a purebred , look up a local breeder and go check what kind of place they run . dont be dumb . besides , mutts are as good and sometimes better than purebreds . adopting from the SPCA will help alot more than just another puppy mill .Answer by realbb101
Thats how it was at the pet store where i bought my puppy.
A breeder also owns a pet store and he was truly upset about hte puppy mills so he got some of his breeder friends to test using their pups. I bought my baby from there to support their cause…All of the puppies are from local breeders that the owner knows personally…and some of the pups are from his dogs.
I have her AKC papers…and i was told which breeder she was from so thati could go check out her parents and grandparents, and i also have her bloodline from the past four generations…all of which were show dogs/champions.
She came with most of her puppy shots and was dewormd and had a vet check.
I posted this on another question earlier stating that you shouldnt ASSUME that pet store=puppy mill…because some people are trying to help solve the problem…and i got so many thumbs down that they hid my answer.
I think its a great idea and i hope that it spreads world wide.
Edit:
If the puppies were not sold after a certain age then the breeders took them back…and i have the number of the breeder of my dog because if for some reason i didnt want her(which would never happen) she would rather have her back then my pup be put in a shelter.
Its something that theyre trying to help out the cause and it doesnt mean theyre irresponsible.
Answer by BlanchedI searched local ads, pet stores (bulletin boards), craigslist, humane society, rescue organizations, etc. until I found the dog (to adopt) that was right for me…
A pet has to be a good match for the family.
I’d use a pet store too if they had the one for me.
Always take a new pet to your vet immediately.

There is no easy answer on this. When I walk into Petsmart and look at the cats, I say I would love to adopt that cat. When they place a price on the animal that is so outrageous, I feel sorry for the animal. Then again many would say, can’t afford the adoption, can’t afford the animal. True in part. But I feel, and is only my opinion, if the price were not $ 120 then every cat would have a home. They could cut that price in half and find homes with good people who would love that animal for 15 + years. Senior citizens with no spouse, this would be great for them and the animal. I am against breeders. I prefer to adopt one from the animal shelters in your local city. Or you may know someone who had a puppy/cat that had a litter. Also in the vet’s office, they generally have a board with animals that needs home. Many of these are seen by that vet so you know they are healthy. Some laundry mats, grocery stores, and small town restaurants have ads by the doors. I don’t think we should buy from breeders or pet stores.Answer by singleworker1230
Nope, I don’t think that pet stores should sell pets at all. Mostly because many of these pets are bought on impulse by people who have little knowledge in their care and treatment. Granted pet stores are kind of the only place where a person can buy fish, birds, or reptiles but I still don’t think that it’s right. These are animals that have feelings and also require special environments and care in order to be healthy. Back to the pet stores selling dogs and cats. These animals are priced very high when compared to those from good breeders. Most are poor specimens of the breed and come with poor guarentees.Answer by Loraine F
I’d want to see what conditions the parents are living in, see the parents, go to where they live. Many puppy mills online claiming to be breeders have many many dogs and live in deplorable conditions.
Just because a pet store says they got their puppies or kitties from puppy or kitty mills, they could be lying, and often time are lying.
Answer by cav momno reputable breeder will sell puppies to pet stores. the pet stores will tell you the pups are from local breeders when in fact they are from puppy mills. 99% of the puppies in pet stores are from puppy mills. even BYB don’t want to share their profit with a pet store.Answer by ILY34
Yes, they really should not sell animals at pet stores. People take one glance at what they think is a *happy* && *healthy* puppy and they are sold. Its horrible and all those poor animals at shelters are ignored.Answer by Silver Girl
Although some pet stores do a much better job of placing dogs than others (like getting their animals from shelters and rescue organizations), they don’t screen the prospective owners. They might think it is fine to chain the dog up in the back yard, etc.
I do like the concept of putting the pets where prospective owners are more likely to see them and consider adopting, but the ideal solution would be for animal shelters and rescue groups to be the ones who actually approved the placement of the doggies in the window.
