Heil Obama, Heil The New Fuhrer: Do you think it is appropriate for the government to try to change certain human behavior through taxation?
Don’t want people driving a particular vehicle? Tax the hell out of it.
Don’t want people drinking so much soda pop? Tax the hell out of it.
Don’t want people smoking cigarettes? Tax the hell out of it.
Don’t want people drinking too much alcohol? Tax the hell out of it.
Don’t want people eating at fast food restaurants? Tax the hell out of it.
Don’t want people using fossil fuels to heat their homes? Tax the hell out of it.
Since when did it become the business of government to try to alter particular behavior through ever increasing taxation of those things they deem undesirable?

Of course not, but they’ve been doing it since they invented income taxes.
You also get a tax break for getting married, having children, and buying a house. What if I don’t want that life? Why should I have to give up more of my income due to such personal choices?

I think it is okay to tax cigarettes – because I don’t smoke. It is okay to tax liquor – though I do drink occassionally. Sin tax is more palatable to most people than a raise in the income tax. And drinking and smoking do contribute to health problems and problems in society. Mostly they pass those taxes because it is easier than trying to raise the income tax.Answer by james s
basically in the constituition the only behavior changing tax mentioned is the import. That is to try to protect American Business and promote national security.. but yes i think the government has gone to far. Even worse instead of just taxing industries like automotive, they want to be able to tax specific companies like GM.. that would be bad.Answer by Retta
I totally agree! I quit smoking about 27yrs ago, but I don’t try to make other people quit just because I did! I wished they would, but it’s their choice, and I think it’s horrible how they’re being taxed!Answer by ANTI-SOCIAList

Every since the Liberal Democrats took over. And it will get much worse.Answer by Mr. Krinkle’s Ghost
No, No, and a thousand times no.
I neither smoke nor drink but if someone chooses to, so be it, the government should not be in the behavior modification business.
Of course they are really just doing it to raise taxes (I guess nobody who smokes makes less than $ 250,000 a year).
Tax it, fine it, ban it. That’s the liberal idea of the job of government. Unless something really is bad for our society, then they’re all for it.
They claim to hate taxing the poor. They claim to hate regressive tax. Come on down here to Tennessee, yankee libs and see who you are taxing.

What cave have you been in? Of course it’s appropriate, and it’s been done for well over a hundred years. Whiskey taxes and tobacco taxes have been around since the Revolutionary War. If it’s in the interest of the people to discourage certain activities, then why not tax it as opposed to prohibiting it altogether?Answer by Michael P
HAHA, someone actually thinks the money is going to children LOL!!! Good luck, the gov’t is nothing but a bottomless pit. May as well just burn the money.
