NO not particularly.
/ As for investing purposes…
“Railroad Promoters” would be those who want you to buy stocks in railroads.
“Stock-market investors” would be people or businesses investing in the stock market by purchasing stocks.
“stock” is one or more ‘shares’ of investment in a company.
A ‘share’ is a specific value (money/worth) given to a company.
“20 shares of stock” … The term ‘stock’ can refer to one share or many shares. In this case, it is 20 shares. These shares may be from one company or as many as 20 companies.
Let’s say, I want to buy some stock in B & O Railroad. Let’s say this stock is trading at $ 52.00 a share.
If I buy 20 shares (20 times $ 52.00) for $ 1,040.00 then you can call me a “stock market investor.”
If my stock goes up to $ 53.00 a share, then I made a profit of $ 20.00 because 20 shares are now worth a total of $ 1,060.00
Let’s say I’m a Congressman, and a Railroad Promoter just gave me 20 stocks for free. That’s the same as giving me $ 1,060.00, but I didn’t really take any money from anyone. I merely accepted 20 shares of stock from a Railroad Promoter.
