Phil: How bad is crime on the University of Maryland College Park campus and its surrounding areas?
I’m seriously considering this school as an option but I’m concerned about the crime rate. The only things I’ve heard are from my parents, but they just seem scared because of the riot that happened when maryland beat duke.
I want to go to this school but all i hear about is how much crime there is
it is really that bad?

I honestly don’t know. I was considering U Maryland, as well as George Washington (which has a pretty high surrounding crime rate) and my parents are a little iffy about me applying because of the crime problem.
In my opinion however, it should depend on whether you like the school or not. Crime is everywhere, and if you know how to handle it safely, and avoid it, you should be fine. Don’t walk at night by yourself, use the campus security to your advantage, and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Good luck to you!
