: What countries tax the property held by churches and religions?
It seems to me that these organizations use the resources of the community as much as anyone else: Police, Fire, EMS, Street maintenance, Water, Sewage… And to the extent that they do not share in the tax burden the rest of us have to pay more than our fair share.
In the US, the Supreme Court ruled that it is not unconstituional to tax a church. (Walz v. Tax Commission of the City of NY (1970))
In fact, if tax exemption is a form of subsidy, then church property tax exemption is a clear violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

yes, I believe in voting next time.
In Sweden, Denmark, Germany and some other countries contributions to churches are deducted by the countries Tax Service. The Tax rate is around 8pc of the workers income. A service charge is levied by the Tax Service, this Tax is on top of regular income Tax. It seems unlikely Americans would sign up to such a system, but it would end griping about Churches not paying their way.
