Violet 🙂: Careers Advice – What should I be when I’m older?
I know I shouldn’t let random people over the internet tell me what I’m going to be, but I just wanna see my different options.
Basically, I’m in limbo over what i wanna do in both college and uni.
Im 15 at the moment, and going on careers fairs and uni visits got me thinking. I’ve always wanted to be a medical doctor and going uni was inevitable; my mum wants me to.
But over the last few months my mind’s changed because I’ve been introduced to so many things things and subjects and courses. I’ve kinda drifted away from medical doctor to psychiatrist (with health/society) film director, actress, fine art or languages.
My problem is that my mum would never accept me being a film director or something like that. Yes, I know it’s my life and I should do what I wanna do, life is too short blah blah…. but then i do want a financially stable life with a job that’s guaranteed to earn me a lot of money.
Additionally, my problem is that there’s such a contrast between my interests – i like the sciences ( esp, biology), media, drama, french ( and languages in general) and art.
And of course there’s no perfect job that could possibly combine these and still earn me enough money and keep me happy.
So my question is – what job would suit me based on what i’ve said?
Oh, also, I f***ing hate maths.
Thanks in advance 🙂

Set designer or production designer, theatre or tv.
Two things struck me, Violet.
One is that you may well change your mind again several times between now (at 15) and when you finish Uni (at 21 or 22). My step-children are in their early 20s and neither are doing remotely what they imagined. In my experience this is quite common. Just ask some friends, relatives and teachers. They want to be artists, they study French Literature and end up as Geography teachers!
The second is that some of your interests may become hobbies, and others your work. I loved everything to do with cars as a boy, and still do, but I never became a car salesman or garage owner. So you could run an amateur dramatic society, yet work as a linguist or translator. Or be a biologist, yet paint as a hobby.
Most of all, right now it doesn’t really matter. Stay curious and interested in stuff (whatever it might be), ask other people to tell you their experience and thoughts, and one day you really will know. But I bet that might not be for 5 or 6 years, or longer.
Best wishes for your studies. (Just study something you love, not because where you think it might lead!)
