TommyGun: Can I become certified as a tattooer through a correspondence course of some kind?
I want to get into tattooing as a serious hobby, not for work or money, at least for now. Regardless, I want to get certified to show appropriate credentials because that is the right thing to do. My dilemma is I don’t want to travel away from where I live to get certified, and I’ve not found any tattooing schools thus far in the area.

You don’t become a “certified” tattoo artist, ever. You need a tattooing LICENSE.
And in order to earn your license, you apprentice under a professional tattoo artist for a certain amount of time. You will also need to get certified in Blood Borne Pathogens, First Aid, sanitation, learn proper bedside manner, etc.

Different states have different laws. You have to pass the bloodborne pathogens test, and in many states, have been apprenticed at a licensed studio for a year. Some states are less stringent, some more. Type in ‘tattoo laws’ on your search bar, and the state you’re in. They’ll tell you the whole ball of wax. Take care.
