Not all businesses are traded in the stock markets. Actually, the vast majority of the businesses in the United States are not listed on any exchange.
That means that it is probably one of three types. The actual names vary a bit from state to state. But in general you have:
1. sole proprietorships
2. a partnership (either general or limited)
3. a corporation.
Since there are various types of corporations and partnerships, you really need to consult with an attorney that deals with businesses in your jurisdiction.
The real answer to what it is worth depends upon how it makes money, what assets it has, what liabilities it has, etc.
For instance a small dry cleaners many generate substantial income but there may be environmental liabilities that go with it–those dry cleaning chemicals are toxic.
So, in some cases the land or the lease may be valuable. In others it may be the cash flow the business generates. A good appraiser can help with the estimates.
In the final analysis, it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. If you have a trusted financial adviser–a banker or lawyer–go talk about how that type of business is normally valued and how to find out if anyone is interested in buying it.
