Joanna L: As a ballet dancer, how do I do my vehicle expense deduction for my federal taxes?
I am an independent contractor for a ballet company. I also work part-time for a regular W-2 filing job. When filling out the vehicle expense section of Schedule C I do not understand what the difference is between business miles and commuting miles. Are commuting miles those between my W-2 job and home while business miles are those between the ballet company and home? So confused.

Commuting miles are between your home and your job That is whether it be a W-2 job, or a self-employment job. If it’s a regular place of business, the one you go to every time you work, it’s commuting.
If you work at two different job locations in the SAME DAY, then the milaes between job #1 and job #2 are deductible.
Milage TO your 1st job, and FROM job #2 to home are commuting.
Any milage to and from a location that is not your “normal” place of work (for either job) is business miles, and deductible. Such as performing in an alternate location, traveling out of the city, performing in a school instead of at your regular location, etc.
Hope that makes it clearer.
