MiM: Are there any laws in California about driving with a dog in the passenger side of a car?
I like driving around town with my bulldog puppy with him in the front passenger seat of my car, but since he is getting so big now, he likes to sit in the back seat and stick his head out the window. I haven’t bought a harness for him in the car yet although I’m planning to, but he doesn’t disturb me while I’m driving. But I was wondering if there are any laws that prohibit dogs from riding in the passenger side of a car, or without any restraints, or any doggy in the car laws. Any good websites to see this information? Thanks for the help!

I don’t think there are but I would be careful about letting him put his head out of the window as it’s not good for their eyes and ears. Especially for catching foreign objects.
A car harness is a great idea though for his safety and yours especially if you’re in an accident he won’t fly about the car.
Answer by staffy_lvrNo there are no laws stating that he can’t ride with you in the front without a harness although, be careful with him riding loose. If you were to get in an accident and the car hitting you was going 45 miles an hour, you will definitely get hurt as it would be a 40 pound dog coming at you 45 miles an hour. It’s gonna hurt, know what I mean? The safest place would be for him either in a crate or seat belted in so he is not jumping around and not getting in your way while driving.
Good luck and hope that helps!

There is no problem with your doggie riding on the PASSENGER side in the front! However, California laws are EXTREMELY strict about letting a dog drive without a license! Be careful!!!

I let my dog do it but she is harnessed securely into the back seat and I just bought her a pair of those “Doggles” – doggie eye protection. She’s secure and her eyes are safe- and it makes her so damn happy!
PS: It took me a week to train her to wear the goggles and I take them off her whenever we stop the car- I don’t want her to try to pull them off.
