Desiree: Are morals regarding appropriate sexual behavior as important for society as Christians make out?
An important moral is murder; if people murdered other people just for the thrill, this is bad for society. Another important moral is stealing; if people stole stuff from other people instead of paying for it, it makes a bad society. But Christians seem to devote little time to these important morals and instead they focus on sexual morals. Is it important for society to have such rigid sexual morals? Can society function with just the basic sexual morals like an age of consent, no public nudity and no sex in public?

Christians fail to recognise that they aren’t important for the world. We are told that many times in the Bible. The world regards sexuality as free reign and of little effect. Sexual morality is a big deal for Christians and so we make the error of projecting that standard on the world. We are told not to judge the world but to discern for ourselves what is right and good in Christ and then to live in the world while not being of the world.

Why no public nudity or public sex?
You’ve made a judgment right there that doesn’t really involve hurting someone, as an age of consent issue does. You just draw the line at a different spot than the people who want to police other peoples’ genitals.
Answer by neil sCrime rates have been directly linked to numbers of unwanted children. Sexuality is also hard for many people to deal with casually, even if they think they can. I don’t think the religious extremes are necessary, but behavior like we see on popular shows such as “Sex in the City” are way too far the other way.Answer by Scooterpoop
The purpose of moral values is to prevent you from inflicting harm on others. It helps if you have a very large collection of them in place and in use.
You’re obviously running a bit low. If you don’t understand this concept, you might be neglecting a very important part of being a functional member of society.
You’re welcome to be as naked as you want as often as you want in the privacy of your own home as long as you keep your drapes closed. In public, you open yourself to the judgments of everyone, and you can cause potential harm to children and sex offenders within view.
Answer by tylertxanrebornthere are those basic morals you mentioned–in which pretty much any society functions better if those basis morals are followed. The double standard–and many of the christian morals derive from the patriarchal society they were written for. Property passed from father to first born son–therefore it was very important that you know your son is your son. Thus the rules with severe penalties against a married woman fooling around–also why it was no big deal for the bible men of old to have concubines–unmarried women used for sex. If your concubine had a baby–it’s known that that child is not of the marriage and not eligble to inherit–thus–why it wasn’t frowned on–cause it made no difference to the social structurre.Answer by Ginger
And you said my lion has issues?
I think you are, perhaps, a little naive.
Answer by john wonderingWhat constitutes “appropriate sexual behavior” is open to argument.Answer by ebby08
Think about it: Wouldn’t there be less divorces, teen and single mother’s, STD’s, abortions and child molestation if people followed the counsel in the bible about sexual matters?
It may not seem like a big deal but if affects society majorly. People have killed over sex. Teenagers have committed suicide because they let somebody take their virginity and then that person dumped them like trash. Somebody young and inexpereinced can’t handle that, that’s why the bible says what until “the bloom of youth”, or the period where sexual feelings are very strong, usually during the teenage years.
Yes, our society has to have “such rigid sexual morals” in order for communities to function properly.
Answer by lawrenceba549They should be. Some should be thought of just as common sense and not morals. I mean, part of what stops some people from, say, stealing, isn’t morality, but a fear of being jailed. Same with murder.
I’m not suggesting all sex acts outside of marriage deserve jail time, but with the rise of single parent households and the negative effect it is having on children, those who fail to see the connection have no common sense.
I was lucky that I had parents who stood up for that belief and stood by what they said. My parents rule if you lived in their house wasn’t “abstinence only”; it was “abstinence or else”, and when my sister got caught having sex, they proved they meant it, and she was of legal age at the time. Further, my parents were NOT religious.
Having sex just for the sake of having sex is more damaging than many people realize. You need more than just the “basic morals” you mention.Answer by Jonathan
ebby08 is extremely correct in this matter. All I have to add is people now-a-day are all about instant gratification and this effects everything. People don’t want to be responsible for their own actions and self control? What is that?
If you can not control yourself or you allow yourself to be directed by your hormones and physical urges, you still have a long way to go until you reach ‘maturity’ (mileage may vary).
God bless
EDIT: lawrenceba549: Your parents are my HEROES! Give them a nice big bear hug from ‘random internet dude’ for being AWESOME!
Answer by ReorientedHonoring the bonds of non-alpha males to their female is the foundation of civilization. Human troops/tribes that did not practice this were overwhelmed when the alpha-males found no other males helping them with defense and the troops that did respect pair bonding had bigger (and more motivated) fighters.
Especially as the new tribe taking over would let them mate and pair. Many alpha-males were probably jumped, killed, and his offspring killed from within.
Answer by Salvaged By † Grace †“Are morals regarding appropriate sexual behaviour as important for society as Christians make out?”
Yes indeed they are.
“An important moral is murder”
What?
Murder isn’t a moral; it is a sin and a crime.
“Another important moral is stealing”
Once again, stealing is not a moral; it is a sin and a crime.
“But Christians seem to devote little time to these important morals and instead they focus on sexual morals.”
What?
You call them morals, I call them sins and crimes.
Just how in the world do know what I devote my time to?
I devote no time to murder, stealing etc., because I do not commit these things.
Do you?
Or am I allowed to make assumptions too about what your time, thoughts and actions are spent on?
It Only Seems that way to You, While practicality does not determine right from wrong, if the Bible’s message on sex before marriage were obeyed, there would be far fewer sexually transmitted diseases, far fewer abortions, far fewer unwed mothers and unwanted pregnancies, and far fewer children growing up without both parents in their lives. Abstinence is God’s only policy when it comes to sex before marriage. Abstinence saves lives, protects babies, gives sexual relations the proper value, and, most importantly, honors God.
