Foss: Anyone have any luck selling a house without a realtor?
Moved about three years ago but kept my house and rented to a buddy until this past June. Have been getting it ready to sell over the summer, cleaning, painting, new floors etc and am almost ready to list it. Is it hard to sell yourself or worth paying the commissions to a real estate agent?

A realtor is fine, however, it is better to ask friends and family if they have a friend that is a Real Estate Agent. If the agent is a friend, he or she, will more than likely go the “extra mile,” when trying to sell your house. It should not be difficult to find an agent in your friend/family circle, as many people have recently gone into the real estate field. Real Estate agencies are professionals, they know the industry and, the in’s-and-out’s of the business, better than the consumer.

It’s a fair amount of work. You must be knowledgeable to do the necessary paperwork and make sure potential buyers are qualified. An absolute must is to to get your house listed on the MLS. Ads in the paper and signs in your front lawn generally do not generate much, if any, interest. Have at least one open house.
You can try selling on your own, and if it does not work out, then you can always get an agent. Personally, I think the commissions are rather high for the amount of work that the agents do.
